More help is needed for elderly

2:00pm Sunday 21st February 2010

IN the recent icy weather, when a lot of elderly people living alone were unable to venture out in case of falling and breaking brittle bones, I feel that the council, to whom we pay a large percentage of our pension, did very little to help.

I have no sons or daughters to help me, and some of my neighbours go out to work and some are not friendly natives. This is partly my own fault as I try to be independent and not bother anyone. I feel there should have been an emergency team set up and a telephone number displayed on television and in the Guardian newspapers, that one could ring and get help and advice.

There seem to be hundreds of societies in Northwich collecting for some charity or other, putting on shows, jumble sales, sponsored walks, swims and other activities but when it comes to one’s own doorstep and in particular the elderly, nobody seems to care. Put them in a home, keep them out of sight, force them to sell their homes and hope they die and save everyone a lot of work and money.

The only consolation we oldies have is the inevitable fact that one day even this generation will get old. Meanwhile, we must find another blanket, turn off the electric fire, and oh not fish fingers again.
