Toucan crossing is not a good idea

WOULD anyone from the Highways Agency care to comment on the logic of installing a Toucan crossing at the bottom of the Winsford High Street dual carriageway when there is a perfectly good subway with disabled access less than 20 metres away?

If there are problems with the drainage and security of the subway then spending a few thousan pounds installing pumps and CCTV is surely better than installing a pedestrian crossing next to a three-lane roundabout.

Pedestrians and roads just do not mix.

A crossing at that point will only succeed in gridlocking the roundabout at peak times with a high likelihood of pedestrian casualities.

I would welcome comments from anyone interested.

Hello Andrew. The Highways Agency cannot help your query about the Toucan crossing as the road concerned is nothing to do with the Highways Agency, which is the government agency responsible only for motorways and a limited number of strategically important trunk roads. You would need to direct your question the local local highways authority (i.e. the council), which is responsible for that road and its crossings.

Andrew,
I agree with your comment.
Closing the subway and putting a crossing on the dual carriageway is a stupid idea.
This was part of the plans that were passed to build the new college in Weaver Street.
At present Weaver Street is full of sub-contractors vehicles which are parked anywhere they can, work on the new crossing has closed one lane of the dual carriageway during the day and traffic is using Weaver Street as a short cut through Winsford. We have had a few near misses since October last year.
400+ students into 63 parking spaces at the new college (do any students walk these days?) You can already see the problem!
The light controlled crossing by the River Weaver bridge near the Red Lion is a must for school children to push the button even though they are not crossing thus holding up the traffic, imagine doing that with the new crossing on the dual carriageway during rush hour.
Still planners no what is best don't they, even though they do not live here.

Just a couple of points about the crossing at the bottom of Winsford high street. This crossing has been there for about 8 years & only now somebody makes a comment about it. More to the point, isn't it about time folk got off their lazy backsides, leave the car at home, get more exercise & give the rest of us a chance of some fresh air ??

Just to put you in the picture re the crossing.
We know a crossing has been at the bottom of Winsford for the past 8 years (near to the bridge & Red Lion Pub)
The new crossing we are talking about is up the dual carriageway about 50 yards from the subway (you may have seen the roadworks while you were walking)
We are not commenting about the old crossing but the new one being installed. The closure of the subway (for health and safety reasons?) is the point we are trying to make. Why not update the subway and make it a safe place to cross the dual carriageway instead of another controlled crossing slowing the flow of traffic (those lazy drivers who do not want to walk)
400 students + staff into 83 parking spaces means a lot more traffic clogging up the roads around the town bridges.

Naggedtodeath.
At one time local councils had to inform residents about planing applications 6 weeks in advance of any further action. This appears not to apply in Winsford, which would explain my lack of information. If folk would like to make their opinions known, why not use the new crossing to slow the traffic & have it removed ???

I think the crossing is just a RIDICULOUS idea!! There is a perfectly good subway that just needs a little investment to make it safer a few yards down the road from where they are building this stupid thing!
It is going to cause endless queues of traffic and we can all see whats going to happen, children are going to find it funny to press the button on it then run down to the other one (again just a few yards away) and press that one! It is going to be total gridlock and will cause more problems than it will solve!
Has anyone confronted the Highways Authority? This needs to be nipped in the bud before its fully built and people get seriously injured or even killed!
Please join my Facebook group aimed at drawing attention to how bad an idea this is. We need support from Winsford residents!
