I AM writing to oppose the building of the incinerator in Middlewich.
Over the past couple of years, I have read with dismay the pro argument put forward by Covanta, particularly in regard to the incineration of local waste products.
This may be the case for the first few years, but I cannot see Covanta not bringing in further waste from other areas as its capacity to incinerate/produce more power increases.
As part of its proposal to produce more energy from waste, it will be hoping to make larger and larger profit from the sale of this energy. This will be how the company will recover its investment.
With reference to the clearance by Cheshire East Council of any health and environment issues, this may be satisfactory at the present time, but as we have seen at Sellafield and the safeguards with its production, accidents do happen.
From Covanta’s newsletter, this incinerator has already been rubber stamped by the encouragement of local businesses, who are going to benefit directly from working with Covanta.
The next issue raised was the offer to complete the Middlewich bypass – which I feel is a bribe in other words. This bypass should have been completed years ago, if the then councils had actually spent some decent money in Middlewich.
Middlewich has been the forgotten town for the past 30 years, but now that the council wants to build something that no one else wants, Middlewich’s name has suddenly been remembered.
