I AM writing to deplore the election of Nick Griffin to a seat in the European Parliament.
He talks about closing the doors to Britain with pride but does he ever think of all those doors kicked open by British armies and the countries taken over by our imperialist forebears during more than 300 years of expansion across the globe?
While some good resulted from these invariably violent invasions, there was much that was bad, arrogant, racist and prejudiced in many other ways.
People and their cultures were treated with mostly contempt and now many of these countries are impoverished, beset by violence, corruption and by a terrible lack of equality, reasons why many of their inhabitants want to come to the developed world to seek quality of life comparable to our own here in Britain.
They risk their lives to get to countries such as Britain, often having had to pay large sums of money to traffickers.
When they get here, they are lucky if they can get some of the worst jobs going where they are likely to be exploited and paid very low wages.
If we look back honestly at our history, should we not be proud of having an open door?
The BNP will cite the Second World War as an inspiration, but it wasn’t.
That war was fought against those who would brook no differences in society and sought to close the door finally on the Jewish community, on the disabled, the Roma, homosexuals and on those brave enough to stand up to their obnoxious ideology.
I would ask people to look at the bigger picture and think how it is that there is such a lack of parity in this world with those in developed countries enjoying a much greater degree of prosperity.
