I THINK there’s a saying that goes something along the lines of ‘a country gets the government it deserves’.

Extrapolating from that, I wonder what the people of Northwich have done to deserve its town and borough councils.

The latest installment appears to have come last week when Clr Mike Jones [the leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council] left his lofty eyrie in the glass and chrome palace that is council headquarters in Chester to appear unheralded and unannounced at the much more modest setting of Northwich Town Council. I find it quite remarkable he should do this without first asking to be put on the council’s agenda.

From what I read, he then proceeded to launch a stinging attack on our local councillors for daring to care about the town and for trying to do something to improve it.

This, in my opinion, is a massive misjudgement on the part of Clr Jones. At least the town council is giving the impression it actually cares about the town and its people. That’s more than you can say about Cheshire West, They can give us all the fine words and promises they want but the people of Northwich will continue to feel marginalised until they see Cheshire West putting its money where its mouth is.

The feeling remains that Chester gets all the gravy while Northwich gets the crumbs and we will continue to feel like until regeneration starts for real.
