COUNCILLOR Hilda Gaddum’s reference to the good progress of Cheshire East Council in her recent letter is a timely reminder of the ongoing excellent work.

At the end of May, the audit and governance committee received a thorough summary, which in particular identifies compliance, monitoring of effectiveness and any changes recommended to governance arrangements. Clear evidence of our commitment to our residents to conduct matters in an open and transparent way.

Close on the heels of this Cabinet received year-end accounts for 2017/18; despite a challenging start, a balanced position is achieved with cash reserves maintained at 10.3 million.

Preparatory work for the 2019/20 budget will soon commence and Paul Bates, lead member for finance will be able to build on the sound financial position delivered.

Cheshire East continues to excel with its most recent recognition being for its Registration Service, which was awarded ‘Best Ceremony Provider’ at the North West Wedding Awards.

Our registrars attend over 2,000 ceremonies a year and over 70 per cent of all couples who choose to marry here come from outside the area, bringing an additional boost to the rural economy up to the tune of £32 million.

Well done Cheshire East.
