THE Fly in the Ointment, Guardian June 14 edition, may need to be cautious in supporting Andy Burnham’s recommended rail renationalisation as a solution to delays and cancellations.

First nationally-owned Network Rail was itself, in part - not fully, responsible for the trouble due to its own lateness with projects both locally and nationally.

They, Network Rail, are also not noted for rapid or timely progress where many of us who support the Middlewich line reopening are horrified by the ‘perhaps, in a decade or so’ prediction.

Any decent local business person, given the opportunity, would see reopening that line as a needed and really promising early project especially since the line and signalling are all in place.

Finally one might note that also nationally-owned British Rail, pre- Beeching, closed that line in 1960.
