WEAVER Vale MP, Mike Amesbury, is quoted in last week’s Guardian as saying: “There’s been an average salary cut of £14,000 for working people in this country.”

This was in relation to his plea to end the public sector pay cap, but it lacked a proper explanation.

£14,000 over what period of time?

According to which sources?

Are people’s wages actually being cut year on year, or are we talking about annual pay increases failing to keep pace with inflation?

I am inviting Mr Amesbury, via this newspaper, to show the evidence which underpins this statement so that his constituents can understand the facts which lie behind the headline.

Politicians are well-versed in making bold and attentiongrabbing claims.

Let’s start seeing the evidence which supports these claims so that we can make well-informed opinions.

Incidentally, I support the move to end the public sector pay cap – I just want to see our MP communicating well-evidenced facts, not soundbites.
