THIS has been my first year as chief marshal for Padgate and Woolston Walking Day (Warrington Guardian, June 29).

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making this such a successful event.

Without the help of all the volunteer marshals it could not have taken place.

I would also like to thank the schools and say how proud they should be of their children who were so well behaved and beautifully turned out.

I extend a special thanks to all the churches and the marching bands.

It is so impressive to observe how they all manoeuvre to get themselves into the correct order of march for the walk.

This isn’t easy as the procession changes every year so that each church gets a chance to lead the procession.

I would like to thank Blue Arrow for their excellent road closure management.

I would also like to thank the borough council’s highways department for all their co-operation and help in the planning of the event.

With so many people walking and with such large crowds watching it is obviously a popular event with the community.

I am sure this event will go on for many more years to come.
