FOR years my husband and I have visited Northwich but admittedly we haven’t been for quite a while because of all the roadworks that were taking place.

On hearing about all the new shops that will be coming with Barons Quay, we returned last week and we really got a shock.

The area all around the market that is just like a ghost town – practically all the shops in Weaver Square are now empty and boarded up.

Only Oxfam, the butchers that sells cooked chicken and a fish and chippers are left.

The Cosy Kitchen cafe which has been there for more than 40 years has closed down. We used to pop in there every time we visited for a cuppa and a bite to eat.

There is hardly anywhere left now that you can now pop in for a brew and a snack if you want to sit inside and not pay a Costa fortune.

On our visit we had to walk from the market all the way to Sainsbury’s for a brew.

Long established family independent shops have been forced to close.

It is such a shame when the council has gone to so much trouble re-paving and modernising the top end of the town.
