I READ with interest the report in last week’s newspaper of John Brooks’ presentation to Northwich Town Council when he updated councillors on the planning application of Ainscough Strategic Land to build a road to service a housing estate of 187 houses to be built on the flood plain of the River Dane in Leftwich.

The developers were granted access in 2013, using Hollands Road and Langley Road.

Brooks said that the site for housing was “done and dusted”.

All that remains, he said, was to demolish 191 London Road, “an ugly house”, and then build the new access – an over-simplification.

He failed to mention: –A new four-way traffic light system will have a severe impact on an already busy junction.

In turn, it will adversely affect the one-way system in the town and impair the town’s regeneration.

–Idling traffic at a hazardous fourway junction will increase the noise and air pollution for many residents in the area –The safety of cyclists and pedestrians, especially the many on the way to and from college and school, will be severely reduced –The proposed single entry/exit road runs through a Zone 3 flood risk area (highest risk) that has flooded four times in the past 10 years.

– The developers arranged for leaflets to be delivered in the Leftwich area which set the concerns of Langley Road residents against those of London Road.

Northwich Town Council has repeatedly and strongly opposed the building of this new road. The planning committee of CWAC refused the planning application by nine votes against and one abstention in December 2015.

A national planning inspector will make the final decision as to whether this road is built.

A public hearing takes place on May 18: venue and time to be announced.
