IT’S fantastic that Cheshire East Council will be introducing 20mph zones around 160 schools in the north west.
If a person is struck by a vehicle at 20mph they have a 97 per cent chance of survival.
Just 10 miles faster this drops to 50 per cent – all for the sake of arriving somewhere slightly earlier. Makes you think, doesn’t it?
It’s particularly encouraging to see 20mph becoming more widespread, especially outside schools in the north west, where congestion is high and children are frequently crossing the road.
Children are particularly vulnerable when it comes to road incidents, so it’s vital that we improve safety outside schools.
These 20mph speed zones contribute hugely to this and in turn helps children and their parents feel more comfortable walking into school, which is better for their health and the local environment.
