ON November 18 at 3.45pm a foreign registered truck passed the warning height sign for the aqueduct on the A530 Nantwich Road, Middlewich resulting in closure of the road.

Four police officers had to attend and they did a sterling job of clearing the road.

I have contacted Cheshire East Council on numerous occasions about vehicles over-shooting the matrix warning sign and whilst they say the driver should see the other sign at Newton Bank I have advised them that on the sat nav system the A530 main road appears not to go under the canal (as in aqueduct) but over the water as in viaduct.

The council seems unable to tell me if they can rectify this problem.

I suggested purchasing possibly two ‘HGVs do not follow sat nav signs’ – one for Newton Bank/Heath and the other side ie Brynlow Drive (know locally as Wallenge).

I thought this might be cost-effective in reducing both the road being blocked and the need for the Cheshire Constabulary to attend incidents such as the one mentioned.

I hear the council already has such signs in the picturesque village of Tytherington (Macclesfield), so someone in CEC highways should know if these signs are effective.

On another note, for the past six months I have been in contact with Cheshire East Council about the gully next to the pedestrian crossing (outside Morrisions/the Lindends/Limes/cemetery and opposite The Golden Lion) on the A54 Chester Road.

It is blocked and there is a large pool of water sitting on the carriageway immediately next to the crossing, when it rains.

Pedestrians are being drenched in this spot when waiting for the lights to change in their favour.

I would ask the highways inspector to come and stand by the water when it rains.
