I SEE this week that Dr Hurst is still responding to readers' letters in the opinion page – yes I am all for free speech and I am all for free trade with the EU and rest of Europe/world – do we get ample return for our monies paid to the EU?

I am confused when reading Dr Hurst’s letter as to whether I am living in a land of milk and honey? Or in reality as four million people in the UK are only one pay cheque away from “going under” is it never never land? Yes while I can see what he says – only when he states we should pay because we are one of the richer countries I do not know financially where we stand in the European wealth leader board.

But with thousands homeless, more job losses and a distressed NHS is the view of us being a richer country somewhat “Dickensian” and while these days there might not be any workhouses is there no poverty? Is there no steel industry? Is there no gender inequality?

Also I wonder when the correspondent state's asylum seekers will still come, does he lock his doors when he goes out or does he have an open borders policy?

In this digital age are we now to be issued with rose coloured glasses? In 1975 Harold Wilson might have shown the country a list of promises ie a set of emperor's new clothes – hence us all being in the altogether now...altogether now..... altogether now... did these promises disappear!
