WHILE agreeing with Rachel Pendleton, p23 in last week’s Guardian, that we must complete the bypass before further development occurs in Middlewich, it is also important that we get the correct route.

If there is the possibility of obtaining a freight terminal, presumably on the back of HS2 this should be seized as it will open up further development in the town as well cutting congestion further.

On the same page, David Williams states that I was uncertain about my position on Sunday trading at the Sandbach hustings.

While this is a reasonable impression to have gained, it is not entirely correct.

What I said was that I do not have strong views on whether trading should be liberalised further on a Sunday, realising that there are arguments on both sides.

A consensus would seem to be that retailers decide individually whether to open at this time with freedom to fix their hours, following consultation with their staff and also respecting those who, for religious reasons, do not wish to work on Sundays.
