I WOULD like to thank you for publishing the article drawing attention to the plight of 1st Davenham Scout Group “Scouts appeal for land” last week. As a leader of this group for around 14 years now, I feel it would be shame to see it close due to a lack of a meeting place.

I would however like to clarify that we are not supporting the over-development of the village of Davenham by building firms, far from it – we are doing our best to preserve the village community identity of which we are so proud to be a part of.

It does seem though, that this government's planning reforms permit most proposed developments to proceed via the appeals process despite local opposition!

If such building is to go ahead despite the concerns raised by so many in our community, including ourselves, then surely it can only be right that county and parish councils ask any developers to donate something back to the community?

All we are asking for is a small piece of land on which we will build, raising funds ourselves.

It would be a meeting place for Scouting groups, families of pre-school children and many others.

My children have enjoyed Scouting and have benefitted greatly in life skills and a love of the outdoors from their time in Scouting.

I wouldn’t like to see that opportunity lost to young people in this village.

However the reality is that this group, split over several locations, none of which are really fit for purpose, is not sustainable for much longer. Building and running a community hall would provide a resource for other community facilities and groups to enjoy and enhance life in our village as well as ensure the future of scouting in this location.
