CAIRO: A Muslim militant convicted by a military court last December
of plotting to overthrow the Egyptian Government was hanged yesterday in
a prison in Alexandria. Sherif Hassan Ahmed was the first person to be
executed in Egypt for a political crime since the assassination of
President Sadat in 1982. The execution demonstrated President Hosni
Mubarak's determination to show no weakness against the militants'
14-month campaign of terror.
