IT WAS announced on TV on March 4 that Cheshire East Council are to step in with more funds for the rejuvenation for Macclesfield Town Centre now that one of the major developers, Debenhams, have withdrawn from the project.

I enquire what are the plans for Middlewich’s rejuvenation following Tesco’s withdrawal from any future development in the town? Tesco had many opportunities over several years to implement one of the four plans passed by Cheshire East.

In place of any regeneration, Middlewich is left with the eyesores created by Tesco’s lack of development.

I refer to the areas on St Anne’s Road adjoining Newton Heath and Southway where once character houses are now reduced to almost squalor. There is a piece of blue hoarding, lying on the pavement since Christmas 2014, on St Anne’s Road near to the junction with Southway. The blue fencing was erected by Tesco’s developers – should they not restore the whole area to its former condition prior to Tesco’s involvement?

Any visitors to the town using Southway will be far from impressed.

Owing to Tesco’s current financial situation it has reneged on building new stores in several areas.

In Bridgewater, Somerset, Tesco have made a compensatory payment to the council for investment for the community.

Does Middlewich not deserve similar recompense? After all, every little helps!
