IT WAS great to read Jeremy Craddock’s column in the Northwich Guardian, January 21, about post boxes and to learn a bit more.

I first became fascinated by them when I saw a little book in a bookshop all about post boxes a few years ago. From then on everywhere I go I take notice of post boxes.

There are all sorts of different ones.

It’s fun looking to see in whose reign they were erected.

I have noticed the VII between E and R in the reign of of Edward VII. There aren’t many of these. I have not noticed the VI next to the GR during the reign of George VI.

I have passed on my little book to my son who also became intrigued by post boxes.

There is a very interesting box at Frodsham with a telephone box and stamp machine (no longer in use) opposite the station entrance just past the railway bridge.

Also there is an interesting one at Albert Dock, Liverpool.

The oldest working post box is in Union Street St Peter Port in Guernsey.

Lots of my friends have been surprised and intrigued by the different inscriptions on the front of the boxes since I brought it to their notice.

I do hope they don’t do away with them like the telephone boxes.
