I READ The Fly in the Ointment’s comments on the awful tragedy of the Manchester Dogs Home, Guardian, October 8, and cannot believe how spiteful a person the mystery columnist must be to publicly air such a view.

The Fly clearly doubts the amazing bravery of the three young men who risked their lives to save the lives of 20 dogs and I suggest they should get the facts direct from the fire service and/or the police present that night.

Not only does our columnist show contempt for the courage of these three men, but he clearly does not value dogs' lives and dislikes Simon Cowell.

Simon not only gave £25,000 to Manchester Dogs Home, he also wanted to show his appreciation to the heroes by offering them a Caribbean holiday.

The Fly probably belongs to that group in society who condemn animal lovers for caring and giving to animal causes but think it is alright to give to human causes.

Most of us support both.

If anyone has ever experienced being in a fire, I am sure you will agree it is an absolutely terrifying experience.

For anyone to rush in without thought for their own safety to save these dogs beggars belief.

They are the real heroes of 2014 and they deserve every award and reward they get.
