I WONDER if the planners of forthcoming flood defences have looked at the situation further along High Street than the Bull Ring?

Some of you will know that many of the buildings along the street were built on stilts because of brine subsidence, but it is also the case that river water seeps under these buildings.

I don’t know if anything has been done over the years but some years ago I worked in the shop which is now the post office.

In the back office of the shop there was a trap door and we used to have a ‘dip-stick’ to measure the water level in the cellar.

It was rare for the cellar to be dry and it could never be used for storage.
