I NOTE that CEBC highways have finally restored the road surface on the A533 Lewin Street, Middlewich, to something like an A road surface.

However, once again, despite me asking about the blocked surface water drains being cleared before carriageway repairs were completed, my suggestion has been ignored, the highways officer saying it will be done eventually.

Wetting of pedestrians is an offence.

Is the council complacent with these grids on a major road with adjoining footway causing this problem, as the surface water other than flowing down in the case of Lewin Street, Halfpenny Hill towards the “belly” of Leadsmithy Street?

When my uncle worked for the old Middlewich Urban District Council the gully heads were maintained, including by using a bowser full of water being flushed from the highest part of a street, washing detritus along the run of the drain.

So when did regular maintenance take a back seat?

Residents have spoken to me about their streets after the Guardian printed my letter about grass growing from gully heads.

So if the council eventually gets around to clearing these gully heads let’s hope that they abandon this chicken-and-egg efficiency, and hopefully no grids will need digging out causing ‘opening of the carriageway’.
