THE memorial stones unveiled by Sandiway Golf Club are a small but significant tribute to the 80th US Infantry Division camped around Pettypool.
The men of the 80th Division were among thousands of Americans who converged on Mid Cheshire during 1944, all part of General Patton’s US Third Army, until now their impact and their sacrifice generally overlooked in the district.
The US 3rd Army did not, however, participate in the D-Day landings and it was not until August 2, 1944, (D-Day + 57) that the 80th Infantry Division landed on Utah Beach, in Normandy.
By the end of the war the 80th Division had seen 277 days of combat and suffered over 17,000 casualties.
