WHILE I agree with much of what the Fly in the Ointment has to say about the importance of resourcing police work properly, Guardian, July 23, I find talk of Bobbies on the Beat to be deeply exasperating.

This is the sort of nonsensical advice that police receive from the great uninformed at public consultation meetings. Guardian columnists should know better.

Easy populism does not inform any debate.

If I were a criminal, vandal or anti-social, I would love to see cops walking about in twos saying ‘evenin’ all’. It couldn’t be easier to avoid them.

We need targeted, prioritised, professional policing making the best use of scarce resources. So please leave them to get on with it and no more talk of ‘Bobbies on the Beat’.
