I HAVE cycled in and around Northwich for 30 years without feeling in danger until the roadworks for the new road system began.

I viewed the plans and was assured that there would be provision for cyclists but, now that everything is nearing completion, it seems that we will continue to be in danger or break the law.

Cycling in from the Castle direction involves pedalling between two lanes of traffic to the bridge and either carrying on in this fashion or diving across the traffic from Winnington.

Return involves dicing with three lanes of traffic along Chesterway to Castle Hill.

There are now nice new pedestrian/cyclist crossing lights but the cyclist can’t get to them without cycling on the pavement!

Cyclists have to take responsibility for their own safety and behaviour but we are now being forced to to either risk injury or break the law.

I do not approve of cycling on the pavement but I do not want to be squashed between two lanes of cars and, unless traffic is light, there are stretches of road where the pavement is the only safe place at the moment.

However there is no excuse for endangering pedestrians who should always have priority and cyclists should never cycle in the pedestrianised areas.

By the way, I have enjoyed the ‘uncontrolled crossing’ signs near the bridge. They have lightened my mood when dicing with the traffic.
