HS2 will lead to more debt
4:53pm Thursday 5th September 2013 in Letters
HS2 is not an Engine for Growth as claimed by HS2 Ltd.
It is an Engine for Growth of the National Debt.
So how Dr Hirst can claim it will generate revenue is beyond me.
He has ignored the NAO report, the New Economic Foundation Report, the Institute of Economic Affairs Report and that of the Institute of Directors, the latter called the scheme a ‘grand folly’.
I wondered who Dr Hirst was in political terms.
If my research is correct he stood as a Lib Dem candidate in Congleton against Fiona Bruce.
I have been trying to find out why the Lib Dems are supporting HS2 and I cannot find any Lib Dem who can tell me.
Though I have discovered a 25 page brochure entitled ‘A record of delivery’ where on page nine it claims the Lib Dems are creating 100,000 jobs through HS2 alone.
Where will these jobs emerge – in tourism according to Dr Hirst.
Are we to sacrifice large swathes of our countryside, are farmers to lose large tracts of productive land, just to boost the tourist industry?
All the evidence points to the fact that each working family will have to bear a tax burden of between £3,000 and £5,000 depending on further increases in costs from the current £53b.
Why cannot he see that if HS2 were abandoned, and the pinch points on the WCML were ironed out, signalling improved, trains extended from 11 carriages to 12, and the latest generation of Pendolino trains able to reach 145 mph, all the existing towns and cities currently served by the WCML not losing out to HS2, then the economic benefits would materialise in the regions much sooner at a much reduced cost?
But I forget, tell a politician that this ‘wonderful project’ will lead to a jobs bonanza in his constituency, and financial logic flies out the window.
If he had studied the latest polls, he will see that UKIP has over taken the LibDems – 17 per cent as opposed to 11 per cent.
Food for thought, surely, Dr Hirst ?
