Big guns come out in support of HS2
11:55am Friday 30th August 2013 in Letters
THERE is an old saying ‘There’s none as blind as cannot see’, which I think this is a very apt description of many politicians.
Clr Mike Jones, so convinced that HS2 will bring an economic and job creation nirvana to Cheshire, that he will not acknowledge the valid and cogent case against the Vanity Project that is HS2.
Moving on to Parliamentary Politicians, have you noticed that the greater the pressure built of by those who oppose HS2, the government wheels out the Big Guns, including George Osborne, for TV sound bites implying we are stupid if we cannot see the benefits of HS2, benefits that they have singularly failed to quantify.
How to persuade politicians that your project is a good one to get behind, no matter that its economics are questionable, just promise them it will create thousands of jobs in their constituency, and they will back it to the death, especially if their majority is slim.
I have written, on behalf of Mid Cheshire Against HS2, to all Cheshire-based MPs.
When I have had a response, because I am not a voter in their constituency, they will not answer our questions.
They hide behind ‘strict Parliamentary protocol’ of only being beholden to answer questions from voters within their own constituency, thus they avoid groups such as ours.
Finally, it was depressing to hear Labour Shadow Transport Secretary, Maria Eagle, saying that there was no alternative to HS2.
As a pragmatist and if I were a Political Activist member of the Labour Party, taking a stand against HS2 would swing a lot of votes behind Labour.
The Conservatives will have UKIP biting at their heels, so it could be said that, if Labour came out against HS2, a lot of Cheshire seats could be up for grabs.
