Stoke v Sunderland: preview

By Ian Probert »

AFTER giving a good account of themselves before losing against a better team on Sunday, tonight is crunch time for Stoke City.

Getting points away from home in the Premiership is proving tough, so a match against Sunderland at the Brit is one we must go all out to win.

And there is reason for optimism. The team is definitely a tougher proposition at the home than it is on the road.

That may be something to do with the smaller numbers of Stokies allowed into away grounds compared to last season.

The last time these two teams met, in the Championship, we were very close to taking six points off Black Cats, who went on to win the league, beating them at the Brit and drawing at the Stadium of Light.

Both teams have better players than they did then, but it is up to Stoke to put them under pressure and go for the jugular.

Despite losing to Manchester City, we again proved that we were capable of creating chances in ways other than Rory Delap’s Exocets and corners – in fact teams may already be sussing out the long throws.

None of our games this season have been easy and this one won’t be either. No team put out by Roy Keane will be laid back about playing us, whatever else the former Manchester United captain is, he is not stupid.

I’ve nailed my colours to the mast in the Kitson v Sidibe debate already and in a game we have to win, it’s surely all the more important to have Dave back in the team.

A win tonight could take us above West Brom in the table and they are currently 13th.

Bring it on.
