Having done a little research I decided to join a local club in order to find out what's involved.
I attended my first club meeting of the South-Lancs and Cheshire Metal Detecting Club on Wednesday 3 February 2010. Being a new member I was slightly apprehensive, but, on my arrival I was greeted and made to feel extremely welcome by the club secretary. I was also asked if I had a detector and given excellent advice on the best machine for a beginner.
My first impressions were really good. I was suprised how many members there were in attendance and how friendly everyone was. The club secretary Betty also made a point of seating me with a couple of experienced members of the club.
I was also impressed with the professionalism of the club and the responsible attitude of members, especially when it came to declaring finds. The club has a strict code of conduct which outlines the importance of responsible detecting.
Each month the club holds a 'find of the month' competition. This gives members an opportunity to display their finds and the chance of winning a prize. I was actually really suprised at the number and range of interesting items that had been found, ranging from a wedding band, a medieval mirror and lots of coins.
Details of local rallies were provided by the club chairman Mr Cliff Passey. Hopefully I will get the opportunity to attend one of the rallies being held at the end of the month. Fingers crossed I will find something of interest which I can enter into next month's competition.
My final thoughts are what a great, interesting hobby. Suitable for all ages and abilities. I'm usually pretty lucky so let's hope I follow in the footsteps of Nick Davies, who found an amazing haul of 10,000 Roman coins in 2009 on his first ever treasure hunt...I can't wait to get started.
