As some of you may know, I chair a local conservation group in Rudheath and Witton.

We’re embarking upon an exciting project to create a working community orchard and theatre space.

It is a slow process, but I’m enjoying it.

The aim is that local people can use the open space positively, respecting that the land is owned by Northwich Anglers and that we can put on a wide range of events there in the future.

Events such as an Annual ‘Apple Day’ could inspire people to be creative with their neighbours, cooking recipes from Cheshire’s heritage or just having fun on the day.

We hope to produce a summer theatre programme, as well as comedy and outdoor acoustic concerts.

BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) will be able to show people about managing community orchards and about a wide range of fruit growing techniques.

It will be a great local teaching platform for colleges and schools or community groups to educate on the environment. The Anglers will also be able to use the space for teaching youngsters about fishing and water safety.

When you think of it the possibilities are endless.

I truly hope people can get behind this project and work in co-operation with the Northwich Anglers to make the most of this beautiful natural environment.

We plan to be at the Rudheath and Witton Together Fun Day on May 1 at Rudheath High school playing fields.

I hope some of you might take the time to attend and show your support for local projects and have some fun.

It’s time communities pulled together like they used to and commit to making the most of the area. The national outlook is very bleak and the only way we can survive is by creating a new society.

It will be very sad if present government policies replicate a Britain from the 80s.

Already, we see our society fragmenting and dividing. There is unrest and protests. If we unite, regardless of status or circumstances, we can still triumph, but only if we embrace our national values of tolerance and fortitude…and ingenuity. Only if we weather the storm together.
