Witton Albion 6 Lincoln United 0

12:00pm Wednesday 24th January 2007

POOR Lincoln were in the wrong place at the wrong time on Saturday.

Witton had forgotten how it felt to win a league tussle - their last success was at Ossett six weeks ago - but rediscovering that feeling was fun.

They equalled the biggest win in the UniBond Premier this term.

Their opponents were outclassed and eventually overrun, lucky in the end not to have suffered an even more embarrassing reverse.

Lincoln's single goal win over Albion in September seems a lifetime away now.

Goalkeeper Mario Ziccardi, a dubious refereeing decision and wasteful Witton finishing were the reasons Lincoln left with comparatively little complaint.

Albion were in control from first to last kick.

They took the lead in the third minute. Carl Frost charged down Ben Dixon's attempted clearance, kept the ball in play and Shaun Miller's centre was nodded home from inside the six-yard box by Griff Jones.

Miller nearly added a second within 60 seconds, but Ziccardi pawed his drive clear. He merely delayed the inevitable.

Jones perception sent Alex Brown clear on 18 minutes, and he squeezed a shot past the keeper at his near post.

Lincoln rallied briefly after the interval, but their anaemic attack was no match for Brian Pritchard and Tony Barras, and Albion clicked through the gears to add three more goals in a seven-minute spell.

Alex Brown's second was the pick of the bunch.

Frost found Jones on the flank and he timed his assist to perfection to allow Brown to fizz the ball past Ziccardi.

Three minutes later Steve Connors played in Frost and he helped himself to his first league goal of the season. Next Brown and Connors combined to tee up Jones to double his tally for the afternoon and stretch Witton's lead to five.

Liam Brownhill completed the scoring on 73 minutes.

He won a challenge on the left hand side of the box against Gary Walters and waltzed his way towards the target before coming face to face with Ziccardi.

Suffice to say Brownhill won the battle.

Lincoln's custodian thwarted Miller as he looked for number seven, but Albion's message of intent to their promotion rivals had already been heard loud and clear.

STAR MAN: Alex Brown.

ALBION: Kennedy, Spearritt, Barras, Pritchard, Brownhill, Miller (Peers 89), Connors, Alex Brown, Lloyd, Frost (Hockenhull 67), Griff Jones (Moseley 80).

Attendance: 223.
