A LONG job interview it may be, but Andy Preece must be close to making up Jim Rushe’s mind about who to hand the managerial reigns next term.
The former Bury boss has picked up more points than any of his predecessors this term and – Mike Marsh aside – in less time.
His team were comfortable victors.
Mathematics makes them a Blue Square Premier outfit at least a little longer and, with clashes against York and Ebbsfleet to come, will have a huge say on who is next term too.
They led on 24 minutes when Simon Grand repeated his trick from last Tuesday, powering an unstoppable header past Cards keeper Ross Worner from Joel Byrom’s corner.
Woking, buoyed by beating Barrow against the odds on Saturday, rarely threatened in a one-sided first half.
Aaron Burns, recalled for the now-departed Kyle Perry, could have doubled the hosts’ lead only to fail to connect with Lee Elam’s inviting centre.
Vics came closer still four minutes before the break, Danny Meadowcroft diverting his header inches over after Mat Bailey had arced Luke Joyce’s assist into his path.
Woking, desperate for points, rallied after the break but only after surviving another scare when the Byrom-Grand set piece tandem ended with the latter steering another header onto the roof of the net.
Wilfried Domoraud, a hat-trick hero in the reverse fixture at Kingfield, speared a free header off target from Oli Bozanic’s whipped corner, He should have scored.
But his miss was not as major as that of Paolo Vernazza, who scuffed weakly at Ryan Clarke from close range after Mat Pattison and Bozanic had carved open Vics’ defence with a devastating one-two.
At the other end another Byrom corner traced a path to Grand’s forehead, this time his effort shaving the bar.
Domoraud then helped a Bozanic set piece around the upright, before sub Liam Marum forced Clarke to parry at his near post after leading a counter-attack.
The visitors’ resistance was cracked on 78 minutes when sub Luke Horrocks resolved a goalmouth scramble by applying the finishing touch to another Byrom-authored dead ball routine.
There was still time for Marum to make a hash of fellow sub Joel Ledgister’s pull back, scuffing his shot into the floor and over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
By then though Woking already knew their luck was out.
