Why should I watch..?

To see exactly how Northwich Victoria respond to being embarrassed by neighbours Winsford United in a derby duel last weekend.

Blues left Barnton with maximum points after an emphatic 4-0 win, an unexpected outcome for Paul Moore’s men who had prevailed impressively in back-to-back North West Counties League games in a new campaign’s opening seven days.

Vics will be expected to beat Abbey Hey, who have failed to follow up on an impressive FA Cup win at Irlam in their first match of the campaign.

Luke Gibson’s men may also have one eye on a preliminary round replay against Maine Road on Monday, kick-off 7.45pm.

What they’ve said

“The next three games are important to us; we’re targeting seven points, and that would certainly keep us close to the top of the table.

“Last weekend’s performance can only be described as a shambles, and we need to bounce back.

“We’re looking good though with Jake [Pollard] and Ian [Willis] returning, while Brian Matthews should be ok as well.”

Paul Moore, Northwich Victoria co-manager

Numbers game

Abbey Hey have failed to score in both of their North West Counties League fixtures to date, and conceded seven times at the other end.

Vics have yet to keep a clean sheet either, shipping 12 goals in five games.

Man to keep an eye on

Yaw Gyimah

The attacker is waiting to get off the mark since returning to the club after spending pre-season with Ashton United.

Should Brian Matthews not be able to complete all 90 minutes, then the responsibility to lead the Vics’ line will be his.

Has proven in the past he’s more than capable of doing exactly that.

Vics team news

Leading-scorer Brian Matthews is expected to play a part despite a thigh strain forcing him off the field less than a quarter of an hour into last weekend’s derby against Winsford.

Jake Pollard and Ian Willis both return, but midfield trio John Bennett, Josh Kavanagh and Stuart McDonald are all unavailable.

Manager Paul Moore also hopes to have a new signing, who plays in defence, available in time for kick-off.
