VICS were held to a point at neighbours Warrington Town on New Year’s Day.

Having exchanged first-half penalties, neither side could find a breakthrough after the interval.

Town’s leading scorer Scott Metcalfe put the hosts in front inside five minutes, converting from the spot after Ben Wharton was fouled while challenging for a 50-50 ball.

But Northwich were level by the half hour mark after Karl Wills rushed from his goal and brought down a flying Aboubacar Sanogo, who got a toe to the ball before the goalkeeper could intervene.

Midfielder Michael Roddy stepped up and sent Yellows’ custodian the wrong way to restore parity.

Prior to that, neither team had created a clear-cut opening.

Wharton had a snapshot fall just wide for Warrington, while Michael Clarke headed wide from a corner.

Roddy had a chance to put the visitors in front before half time, but his drive was well-fielded by Wills after brilliant trickery down the right by Godwin Abadaki.

The second half turned into a scrappy affair as the conditions, and a slippery surface, took its toll.

Robbie Booth’s cross created an opening for Wharton, who shot wide, but it was Vics who looked more likely to score after the break.

Sanogo poked off-target from a free kick on 65 minutes, before Brian Summerskill’s right-footed drive was saved smartly by Wills.

Vics: Deasy (GK), Smalley, Ali, Clarke, Henry, Cook, Summerskill, Roddy, Abadaki, Bennett (Amis), Sanogo. Subs not used: Smith (GK), Meadowcroft, Gorman, Sharratt. Attendance: 274.
