PAUL Moore admits the decision to step down as Northwich Victoria manager was tough but insists it is the right one for all parties.

After taking over midway through last season, in which they were relegated from the Northern Premier League First Division South after entering administration, Moore led Vics through the first seven games of this campaign.

His decision to step down came immediately after last Wednesday’s game at Hanley Town, which was abandoned due to floodlight failure with Vics 3-0 down.

Moore cited increased work commitments for his decision to leave Townfield and says he hasn’t felt able to “give everything he should” to the job.

Vics have since appointed Steve Wilkes as their new manager and Moore believes the squad is capable of climbing the North West Counties Premier Division table from their current position of 17th.

“I’ve made a tough decision for a number of reasons, but I believe the growth of my business over the past few months has made it the right one,” he said in a statement on his Twitter page.

“I don’t believe I’ve given everything that I should because of my work commitments, and it’s had an impact.

“This season has started strangely, and it is a results-based business.

“We’ve put together a good squad, but they just haven’t reached the consistent standards yet. They are capable, though.”

Moore also put on record his gratitude towards everyone at the club after what he described as “some horrendous times” when he first took over.

“I have tried to help the club in every way possible in my time here,” he said.

“That has been made easier with (chairman) Brian Turner and (secretary) Dave Thomas, who have been a massive support to me through some horrendous times.

“Northwich Victoria, and the people involved, are very special and I’d like to wish everybody - the board, players, staff and the loyal supporters - every success in the future keeping the proud name going.”

After Moore’s departure was announced, Vics released a statement expressing their thanks to the former boss for his contribution to the club.

“Paul has worked incredibly hard during his time with the Trickies and has always been professional and dedicated in everything that he has done,” the club said.

“He has a new business that has started to take more of his time.

“As a result, Paul was finding it more and more difficult to dedicate his time and effort to his role for the club.

“Paul leaves with our sincere thanks and appreciation for everything he has done for the club, especially during the difficult season last year.

“He has been a credit to the club and we wish him all the very best in driving his new business forward.

“Paul will always remain a friend of the club and we look forward to welcoming him back as a supporter in the near future.
