Witton Albion will be first team to play at Runcorn Linnets' new home

WITTON Albion were first choice for Runcorn Linnets when it came to picking a foe for the first match at their new home, according to chairman Derek Greenwood.

Paul Ogden’s men play in the curtain-raiser at Millbank Linnets Stadium on Saturday week.

“It will be a very proud moment for the club,” said Greenwood.

“Since the club was reformed we have played out of town at Witton’s excellent Wincham Park so we were delighted when they accepted our invitation to be the first opponents.”

The Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division club will open its doors at 1pm for an exhibition match between two juniors teams.

The official opening follows at 2.15pm, marking the first time the new club has called the town ‘home’ since the old one left Canal Street in 2001.

Runcorn first team manager Steve Wilkes is grateful for Albion’s since the Linnets’ formation in 2006.

They have played home matches in Northwich since.

“Witton have been fantastic for the club,” he said.

“We wouldn’t be where we are now if it wasn’t for them.”

The match kicks off at 3pm.

Admission is £3 for adults, while OAPs pay £1. Accompanied children enter the ground free.
