WITTON Albion strolled to their biggest win of the season at Stalybridge on Thursday, securing with it a seventh-place finish.

It also ended a six-match sequence without a victory for Carl Macauley’s men, who assumed complete control from the moment Steve Tames scored the opening goal against his former club.

Invited to run onto Paul Williams’ pass, he lifted a smart finish over goalkeeper George Sykes-Kenworthy.

The home team had posed more of a threat until then, and Albion custodian Calvin Hare pushed Oliver Roberts’ shot around an upright.

Jake Charles and Connor Hughes both went close for Steve Burr’s side too before Tames ran clear on 36 minutes.

Roberts was again thwarted by Hare before Rob Hopley’s pass provided an opportunity for Tames to make it 2-0 – his 30th goal of the campaign.

Any hopes Stalybridge, who hosted Workington 24 hours earlier, had of a comeback were dashed when Will Jones turned in a corner at the near-post with a header shortly after the interval.

Another former Celtic man, midfielder Prince Haywood, fired in goal number four from a deep cross on 65 minutes.

When a sliding Hopley prodded a loose ball over the line, after Owen Dale had sent the ball his way, the hosts’ resistance had vanished.

Macauley sent on a third ex-Stalybridge man, Cesaire Lingbouba, and teenager Ronan Eves during the closing stages as the visitors cruised to the finish-line.

Dale almost added a sixth, but his dipping shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Sykes-Kenworthy.
