Witton Albion 3 Hednesford Town 1

ALBION humbled Hednesford to extend their lead at the top.

Their win was not without rancour though, with skipper Tony Barras set for a six-week spell on the sidelines after leaving the pitch on a stretcher.

But Witton's class put the Pitmen in their place.

The visitors stunned their hosts on seven minutes when leading marksman Ross Dyer headed home at the near post to put his side ahead.

Barras' replacement Ian Kearney made an instant impact, netting the leveller five minutes after his early entrance when Phil Starbuck's men failed to clear Mark Peers' free kick.

The equaliser settled the hosts, who came close to taking the lead through another Peers set piece which this time beat the wall but could only find the side-netting.

Hednesford's heavy tactics earned them only one caution before the break, much to the surprise of the biggest crowd to watch a match at Wincham Park this term.

Albion's breakthrough came on the hour, Steve Brodie collecting Adam Warlow's ball on the right and whipping in an early low cross that Rod Thornley steered past Town keeper Rene Gilmartin at his near post.

On 68 minutes the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Neil Brisco stamped on former Pitman Dave MacPherson.

Albion took immediate advantage.

Warlow bagged his 13th goal of the season, slotting home when faced with Gilmartin following Peers' neat assist to stretch Witton's winning home streak to a magnificent seven.
