Leek Town 2 Witton Albion 2

DORRYL Proffitt's leveller let Witton cash in a point at Leek.

He pounced to score on the hour to notch his third goal of the week and extend Albion's advantage at the top of the table to five points.

But Jim Vince's men were made to dig deep for their draw.

Too many times his side over-elaborated and were swamped by the sheer exuberance of a set of players looking to satisfy new manager Paul Moore.

But it was an ex-Leek legend, Dave MacPherson, who opened the scoring on the quarter hour.

Rob Lloyd played in Mark Peers down the right and his cross fell to Tony Barras who looked to have scuffed the opportunity, but MacPherson was on hand to finish.

Leek countered and, when a free kick near the right touchline was awarded five minutes later, debutant Dean Canning rose perfectly to meet Karl Brown's centre for the equaliser.

Proffitt should have had a penalty four minutes before the break when he was grounded by home custodian Matt Cooper, but the referee ignored his appeal.

In the dying seconds the same players twice came close to regaining Albion the lead.

From a Peers' corner his headed attempt was held by Cooper under the crossbar and then from the tightest of angles he clipped a shot across goal.

Witton paid for their profligacy.

Two minutes after the restart Steve Brannan's cross was met by the head of an unchallenged Louis Briscoe to complete the hosts' comeback.

Witton responded with a header from Proffitt that hit the base of the post with the ball again running agonisingly along the line.

But their equaliser did deservedly arrive soon afterwards.

Cooper made a hash of things when he came to meet former Wittoner Dave Tickle's sliced clearance.

Tony Barras seemed set to score only to hit the woodwork, but Proffitt got the perfect finishing touch from the rebound.

The visitors then had to endure long periods of Leek pressure, with former Winsford United front runner Rob Hopley denied by a brave block by Jon Kennedy.
