Witton Albion 6 Prescot Cables 1

12:00pm Thursday 11th October 2007

WITTON pummelled Prescot to avenge their FA Cup exit.

They led by a single goal at the break, courtesy of Brian Pritchard's looping header, but stubborn Cables had been the better team.

The Merseysiders had no answer to awesome Albion after that though.

Jim Vince's men started in thunderous style when, in the opening seconds, a ball from the right was flicked on by Adam Warlow for onrushing debutant Dave MacPherson to smash the ball past former Barnton and Albion keeper Richard Mottram.

On the 50th minute though Cables were thrown a lifeline.

Referee Paul Graham punished Tony Barras' tackle on a Prescot attacker, despite the Witton veteran appearing to time his challenge to perfection.

The linesman, in a better position, offered no verdict so the man in the middle pointed to the spot. Thomas Moore sent Jon Kennedy the wrong way.

Hope of giving Witton another bloody nose soon faded.

James Dever scythed MacPherson down and Rob Lloyd's perfectly flighted ball over the wall saw substitute Dorryl Proffitt produce a diving header to notch his first goal for the Albion.

On 71 minutes sensational footwork from Lloyd ended with a wondrous finish past the crestfallen Mottram.

Pritchard was substituted following the goal and with Albion readjusting Moore brought an excellent save from Kennedy.

The 74th minute again saw Lloyd produce a dazzling move before prodding the ball into Proffitt's path with the reprieved striker going on to slot the ball past Mottram.

Vince then was afforded the luxury of withdrawing Barras and three minutes later, again following a free-kick, his replacement Ian Kearney breached the shellshocked defence to head home.

Mottram managed somehow to get his fists to a vicious MacPherson shot, while the angered absence of a goal for Warlow was fully evident when his rasping shot cannoned down off the crossbar.

The former Crewe hotshot slid in perfectly to meet Liam Brownhill's cross during stoppage time but the ball ended narrowly wide.
