WITTON Albion’s first defeat – against league rivals who had lost both their opening matches – under Paul Ogden’s stewardship is a costly one.
No FA Cup cash for a second successive season leaves the manager with one less chance to boost his weekly wages budget.
In truth they rarely looked like adding a third defeat to their hosts’ collection.
That Mossley’s goals were so messy only adds to Albion’s anguish, particularly as they played in front of a crowd almost half of which were Wittoners.
The visitors were grateful to custodian Matt Cooper for keeping the scores level when he denied Lee Blackshaw following a free kick.
But the Lilywhites led on 37 minutes.
Andy Kinsey surrendered possession cheaply to prompt a Mossley counter, ex-Witton man Michael Oates teeing up Connor Hampson for a shot that was parried by Cooper.
The attacker found the net from the rebound though.
Peter Heler then blasted over on the whistle to give Witton hope.
Ogden, as is becoming custom, made a change at the break to send substitute Chris Smith into attack alongside Kinsey.
But it was at the other end of the field where the first shots of the second half were fired, both whistling past the upright.
Cooper then dived full length to push the next effort around a post.
Heler’s cross evaded Mossley keeper Peter Collinge only for Kinsey’s diving header to trickle wide, then Cooper again kept Albion in the contest when he smothered a loose ball.
The visitors were then left to play the final quarter with ten men when Phil Parkinson limped off after Ogden had used each of his permitted substitutes.
They continued to attack though.
Heler’s assist found Josh Hancock but his shot lacked power then replacement Carl Frost stung the net-minder’s palms with a fierce shot that forced a corner.
A low attempt from Hancock was deflected wide too, then Smith headed Frost’s flag kick off target.
Former Winsford United goals-getter Hancock then let fly from outside the box only to see his drive flash wide.
Mossley made safe their passage to the next stage in stoppage time, substitute Matty Kay applying the finishing touch from close range after the referee ignored his linesman’s flag.
