Witton Albion start new season on a winning note against Garforth Town

WITTON Albion’s start was a winning one thanks to a stunning first half strike from player coach Dave MacPherson.

But the hosts were pushed all the way.

They came up against resolute opponents who forced manager Paul Ogden to make a tactical switch soon after the quarter hour as a counter.

Chris Smith came on for Christian Millar and Albion gathered momentum.

The replacement’s first touch teed up Andy Kinsey for a shot that curved over the crossbar, then the ex-Nantwich man headed too high after meeting Matthew Wood’s lob.

At the other end Matt Cooper was alert to turn away Adam Priestley’s shot.

Witton hit the front five minutes before the interval when MacPherson fired a loose ball back through a crowd of players from outside the penalty area to leave keeper Jody Barford with no chance to save.

Albion looked more likely than their guests to score after half time.

Peter Heler blazed over after Matthew Holt’s long throw reached him following a scramble, then Kinsey and Smith swapped passes only for a defender to deflect the latter’s shot to safety.

Town rallied for a spell after that.

Kinsey cleared off the goalline from a free kick then referee Matthew D’Aguliar ignored Garforth claims for a penalty after one of their players tangled with sub Brian Pritchard.

Priestley should have scored with a header from Paul Walker’s cross, but he failed to even hit the target when a goal seemed a certain outcome.

Witton reassumed control and Barford pawed clear Kinsey’s drive following fine work by Smith as they pushed for a match-clinching second goal.

In the end they did not need it.
