Witton Albion denied a friendly victory by Jon Newby's second half goal

Witton 1 Colwyn Bay 1 Witton 1 Colwyn Bay 1

FORMER Northwich Victoria front man Jon Newby scored a second half leveller to deny hosts Witton Albion victory a second successive win against higher-ranked opponents.

He raced on to fellow substitute Alex Tichiner’s clever pass to fire past ex-Vics teammate James Coates on 77 minutes after Albion’s on-trial custodian had kicked straight to Colwyn Bay’s midfield man.

It was harsh on Witton.

Paul Ogden’s men had hit the front on eight minutes when Andy Kinsey thumped a header past Chris Sanna from Peter Heler’s cross after he had picked Dan Grannon’s pocket down the right.

Heler then blasted an angled drive straight at Sanna after latching on to Dean Caning’s assist.

At the other end Matt Cooper was alert to block a shot from a Bay trialist at close range before recovering quickly to smother the rebound too.

Both teams made changes in the second half, when Bay took the initiative.

Newby had been wayward twice before striking a rising shot past Coates to level, then Joe O’Sullivan and Luke Denson went close with efforts from outside the box.

Witton might have found a winning goal when Heler’s fine throughball sent substitute Chris Smith racing clear, but his drive across goal skimmed the far upright.
