Easy does it for Witton Albion as they prove too strong for Spalding United

WITTON Albion saw off division’s whipping boys inside half an hour, although an expected avalanche of goals never arrived.

Gary Finley will settle for a return to winning ways after last weekend’s home humbling.

His team scored three times in the first 20 minutes.

First Ryan Broadhead headed in Danny Warner’s free kick to put the hosts in front on six minutes then debutant Paul Brown – signed from Droylsden on Friday – doubled their lead.

He dispatched Carl Lamb’s assist past Tulips keeper Michael Emery in emphatic fashion.

Next Emery’s fingertips took the ball off the head of Broadhead before Jason Field cleared a shot off the line.

The visitors’ custodian then thwarted Lamb as he bore down on goal but there was little he could do to prevent Witton scoring a third time on 21 minutes.

Peter Heler blasted a free kick past Spalding’s wall into the corner of the net.

Albion continued to dominate and came close again when Carl Ruffer headed Colin McAllister’s cross straight at Emery.

The same pair combined again on the half hour with the same result.

There was a rare scare at the start of the second period when captain Paul Henry, back after a three-matches suspension screened possession.

Fortunately for Finley’s men neither David De Oliveira nor substitute Alex Fitzgerald made him pay.

Normal service was soon restored when Brown’s shot from Brad Maylett’s pass was blocked.

Spalding were reduced to 10 men on 69 minutes following a skirmish between De Oliveira and Henry, the former seeing red after pushing his head into his opponent’s face.

George Cox cleared the ball off the line from Lamb’s flick after Heler had done the spade work wide on the right before a double save from Emery, first with his legs to deny Heler then a point-blank effort from Brown, managed to keep the score down.
