Witton Albion fall after dodgy penalty call at Shepshed Dynamo

WITTON Albion, like their neighbours, were left to curse a debatable decision by a referee as they slipped to an away day defeat.

John Mayhew awarded a spot kick to the hosts midway through the second half – converted by Chad Sheppard – left Gary Finley’s men playing catch-up.

“It [the penalty] changed the game,” said the Albion boss.

“Before that we had created better chances and had more possession than they did, but we didn’t take the opportunities we had.”

Lee Neville was judged to have tripped Luke Barlone, but Witton did not agree.

And, to add insult to injury, Barlone doubled Dynamo’s tally four minutes after the hosts’ opener with a brilliant shot from distance that flew past keeper Joe Clegg.

Steve Foster cut inside his marker on 71 minutes before halving the Albion’s arrears with a fine drive but his teammates could not conjure an equaliser.

Instead they breathed a sigh of relief when Jai Stanley failed to hit the target when face-to-face with Clegg late on.

Finley added: “We were chasing the game after they scored and could do nothing about what was an excellent second goal.

“We tried to change things and had a chance after Steve Foster’s goal when we got back on top again. But it just didn’t happen for us.”

In the first half Carl Ruffer headed Jamie Tandy’s free kick straight at Shepshed keeper Nick Jupp, then the hosts’ custodian twice denied Brad Maylett in as many minutes.

Foster came closest though, ending a fine passing move with a shot that clipped the crossbar.
