Peter Heler's double sends Witton Albion through at expense of Altrincham

PETER Heler’s stoppage time winner helped Witton Albion see off the holders on their home patch.

He was in the right place at the right time to pounce on a loose ball inside the area to settle a contest interrupted by floodlight failure at the start of the second half.

The delay did not deter the visitors, who bowed out at the last four stage of the competition against the same opponents last term.

In a game that flowed from one end to the other it was the home side who took the lead on 39 minutes after Albion failed to deal with a corner, Chris Senior driving home at the near post.

Gary Finley’s men restored parity four minutes after the deferred start to the second period, Heler cutting inside his marker before guiding a shot across Alty custodian Stuart Coburn into the far corner.

Albion should have scored a winner long before they did.

John McAliskey beat the offside trap to leave himself in a one-on-one with Coburn, but the keeper made an expert stop with his legs.

Moments later Heler had the chance to net his second goal but from eight yards he drove wildly over.

It was then the turn of Jamie Tandy to fail to beat Coburn, this time from the penalty spot after Albion had been awarded a free hit for a foul on Bard Maylett.

Once Coburn who kept his side in the game, diving full length to his right to push away the former Droylsden man’s spot kick.

The Robins, fielding former Witton bit part man Ant Danylyk, almost punished their neighbours when Lee Neville cleared an effort off the line.

But, with extra time looming, it was Heler who booked Witton’s passage into the last eight.
