Reece Styche scores only goal as Chasetown see off Witton Albion

REECE Styche scored the game’s only goal on Witton Albion’s first visit to the Scholars’ Ground.

His goal was a worthy match-winner, scoring a rising shot past Joe Clegg after scampering clear down the visitors’ exposed right flank.

There was a quarter hour on the clock.

Clegg thwarted Styche’s next effort on 28 minutes before Steve Foster fluffed a sitter for Albion.

Brad Maylett’s cross from the right found Albion’s leading scorer in space but, with only keeper Ryan Price to beat, he sent his shot wide of the upright when it seemed easier to score.

Four minutes later full back John Branch was handily placed to put behind another Maylett cross.

Witton looked set to fight back as the second half began, fired up by vocal support from their sizable following, but with rain making the conditions tricky the pace slowed.

Brian Pritchard probably had Albion’s only real shot on target three minutes into the half but his effort was deflected off a defender to safety.

Chasetown were awarded a penalty on the hour after Styche was deemed to have been fouled by Pritchard, but justice was done as Gary Birch drove the ball wide of the upright after sending Clegg the wrong way.

Stuart Rudd, sent into attack following the introduction of Callum Tai-Hogan, had a chance to level with five minutes left to play he ballooned his shot well over the bar.

There was controversy in stoppage time when Foster’s attempt to reach Rudd’s assist saw him slide into Price, provoking a melee involving players on both teams.

Referee Patrick Keane showed a yellow card to the former Salford City front runner followed by a red, even though the 27-year-old had not been booked earlier in the encounter.

He was allowed to stay on the field, but could not help Witton avoid only a second defeat in their past eight league and cup matches.
