GARY Finley was all smiles after putting one over on his former employers.
The Witton Albion manager, axed by the Welshmen last year, dumped his old club out of the FA Trophy in convincing thanks to Brad Maylett’s double.
It marked the Wincham Park men’s fifth successive win in league and cup.
“It’s always great for manager’s to go back to their old clubs and get a result,” said Finley afterwards.
“I didn’t want to make too much of a song and dance about it beforehand but I was desperate to go there and win the game, which we did.”
Their reward – aside from £2,000 in prize money – is a home date with Southern League Midlands Division outfit Sutton Coldfield Town on Saturday week.
But Finley, forced to shuffle his pack in the absence of injured pair Steve Brodie and Mike Moseley, preferred to savour his success before thinking about Witton’s next opponents.
He said: “I have watched Colwyn Bay a few times this season and they are a decent team who have beaten other good sides this season.
“I expected a tougher test, but we were comfortable winners.”
Maylett had already gone close before scoring the opener on the half hour.
Keeper Joe Clegg’s clearance was flicked on by Jamie Tandy, sending the former Northwich Victoria wide man clear to fire past Chris Sanna.
The hosts’ custodian thwarted Steve Foster soon afterwards, while at the other end Clegg was quick to smother a loose ball in front of goal.
There was an ugly moment when ex-Winsford United goal-getter Rob Hopley left the pitch on a stretcher following Steve Hall’s challenge – a fair one – close to the touchline.
Bay’s players were furious, but the referee took no further action than to award a free kick.
Foster twice saw shots blocked as Albion remained in the ascendancy, then Tandy chose to try and pick out Maylett when a run on goal seemed a better option.
The tie was settled on 83 minutes when Maylett rounded Sanna before curling the ball into the net from an acute angle from Lee Neville’s assist.
