Witton Albion can ill afford a slow start at Chorley, warns defender Paul Booth

PAUL Booth says Witton cannot start slowly against Chorley tonight.

The Albion defender told the Guardian that a repeat of Saturday’s first half performance in Saturday’s 2-1 success against Blyth will be punished more severely.

“We have to be better from the first whistle,” he said.

“Chorley have probably the best front pair in this division, so they’ll make us pay if we’re not ready.”

He will come face-to-face with Steve Foster, a former teammate at Wincham Park, in tonight’s Premier Division encounter at Victory Park, kick off 7.45pm.

The ex-Witton man was leading scorer in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League’s top flight last term.

Booth said: “These are the games we want to play in, it’s why we worked so hard to be promoted.

“It will be a good test for us, and we’ll learn a lot about the standard of player we can expect to come up against at this level.

“That doesn’t mean we’ll be scared though; we’ve got people in our team who are more than capable of being a success in this league and the one above.”

Witton did for Blyth with a stoppage time penalty, converted by Anthony Gardner, after dominating the second half.

Shaun Tuck had put them ahead – his first goal for the club – before Robbie Dale restored parity less than five minutes later.

“Blyth were a good team, they caught us by surprise,” said Booth.

“We were a bit nervy, which encouraged them, but everybody can relax now we’ve got that first win on the board.”
