Finley: Let's make top five for Mike

GARY Finley believes Mike Moseley’s season-ending injury could prove an added spur for his teammates to achieve their aim of making the play-offs.

The 30-year-old broke his leg in last weekend’s home reverse against Carlton Town.

“We’ve got an extra incentive,” the Witton Albion boss told the Guardian.

“The lads want to win for Mike after what happened.”

Moseley, who had an operation on Monday, is expected to be out until the start of next season.

His absence leaves Finley once more short of options in attack with Steve Foster serving a three-matches suspension and Carl Lamb (knee) struggling with injury.

Ronnie Morgan, who Saturday’s 3-0 defeat because he had to work, is expected to be back for tomorrow’s home encounter with UniBond League Division One South strugglers Spalding United.

Finley said: “It sounds like I’m making excuses but it’s a fact that we were struggling last week with three forwards missing.

“There were three other players missing too; it just seems to be one thing after another when things aren’t going your way.”

One player who did emerge from last weekend with his reputation enhanced is former Middlewich Town midfielder Ryan Broadhead.

Already used in the centre of defence and midfield this term, he filled in up front following Moseley’s enforced exit and impressed hugely with his strength and ability to bring in teammates after holding up the ball.

“To be fair to Ryan he just gets on with it no matter what role we ask him to carry out,” said Finley.

“He did a good job at the back while Brian Pritchard was out injured then he moved into midfield when Paul Henry was suspended.

“He’s done really well since coming in.”

Witton host Spalding desperate to halt a slump that has seen them take only five points from the past 15 up for grabs, a return that leaves four points adrift of the play-offs places.

But Finley is adamant Albion remain contenders to extend their season thought as they bid to return to the UniBond League’s Premier Division at the first attempt.

“We still believe we can make it,” he said.

“The players were just as upset as the supporters at the weekend, now it’s important that they react in the right way on Saturday.”

Kick off at Wincham Park is 3pm.
